Updated: Nov 6, 2020

How to think in English?

Thinking in English without translating a statement in your mind sounds challenging, especially to those learners who don’t get to encounter English words on a daily basis.

In my country, the Philippines, English language and our native language were both widely used nationwide. The directions you get to see on the streets and main roads are in English language. When we go out and visit a store, you will see post saying “We are open” and upon entering the store you will see instructions like “ Push the door” or "Pull the door ". Those things have helped me think in English as I immediately process my mind to understand it. But for some, encountering English words has to be intentional. You need to create a surrounding or atmosphere that will help you think in English. I know this will take a lot of effort but the practices I will share today on this vlog will be helpful for you as you progressively elevate your independency in comprehending the English language.

Before anything else let me encourage you to not to use a translator dictionary because we need to train ourselves to think in English and make it part of our daily activities. Also I want to remind you that learning English takes time, but don’t get frustrated because you can do it!

Ways to train your brain to think in English

  • Naming Words

Identify the things around you. You can start by using simple words and start right there at your home, You can do it by naming the objects around you.

Example: It’s a Television, It’s a Bed, Fridge and so on.

You can also label specific objects at your home until the word is already part of your brain system.

As you progress, you can do the next step.

  • Describing Pictures

You can describe the things that you get to see at home or to your surroundings.

Example : The fruits are on the table. The sky is blue. The building is so big.

You can also describe the photos you see in Facebook if you want.

Describing pictures is a practice where you train to express yourself in a complete idea or in a complete sentence.

  • Inner Conversation

Inner conversation may sound weird, but this practice will help you improve to think faster and will gradually lead you to the level where you can process the information that goes into your mind without translating it.

Inner conversation will help you develop a habit that will make English language be part of your brain system, because this will help you train yourself to give an immediate response or reaction to what your body is telling you.

Example

Woah, I had a long day!

I feel hungry.

I’m so tired.

Or when you find the movie you are watching hilarious, you can respond and say "That’s so funny". This practice will help your initial response be in the English language.

  • Narrating

You can apply this method when you’re planning your to do list, or

things to buy. This practice will help you coordinate word, ideas and phrases.

Example :

Tomorrow i plan to relax, go to the mall, buy myself a new dress and eat at my favorite restaurant.

And those are the methods you can apply. To experience improvement on how to think in English, this practice has to be part of your habits or daily activities. So Be patient with yourself, stay positive because you can do it!
