Parts of a Dictionary

Dictionary is a must to every English Learner, it provides the exact meaning of every word and tells how it can be used. It is a book that contains different words in alphabetical order and explains their meanings.

Many times in my videos I have encouraged our students and viewers to level up and use the English dictionary. In today’s blog I will share the parts of the dictionary for them to be properly guided how to use it in full capacity.

Parts of a Dictionary

Guide Words : Found on the upper part of the page This part tells you the first and last word that was defined on the page.

Entry Word : It is the word that will be defined and was highlighted for the readers to find the word easier.

Pronunciation : This can be found beside the Entry word, usually separated in syllables and tells you how to say it. The symbol (‘) tells you which syllable to be stressed in pronouncing it.

Parts of speech : Beside the pronunciation part you will see a letter that will tell you which part of speech the word is. Most of the dictionaries use abbreviations.

Definition : Tells the meaning of the entry word, If the entry word has 2 or more meanings it will be divided by numbers.

Example Sentence : Some dictionaries shows sample sentences.

Inflected word : This shows the changes in the spelling of the Entry word. (find, finds, found)
