2 Things You should Know before Learning the English Language

Updated: Feb 18, 2021

Do you want to study the English language? If your answer is YES, then you have to identify what is your goal and purpose in learning the English language because these are the things that will make you fueled up and motivated in the days you are struggling in learning the language.

Before anything else, let me tell you the difference between goal and purpose. Goal is measured by time, it can be a long term goal or short term goal while purpose aims for -why. What is the reason why are you doing certain things?

In relation to the English language, I want to ask you - Why do you want to study English? Some of the reasons my students gave me are : for travel purposes, for a job, they want to become a translator, they have relatives abroad and they want to talk with them.

How about you, what is the reason why are you studying a new language?

Next is - Goal : Are you travelling next year? Or Are you going to apply for a job in 6 months time? How do you see yourself 2 or 3 years from now?

Do you see yourself , confidently speaking the English language? Having a goal will help you set a time on fulfilling your purposes.

Let me share this real story :

So I had a student, she is from South Korea. Her purpose in learning the English language back then is because she wanted to study abroad. I asked her when do you want to study abroad? She said next year and she wanted to send her application in 6 months' time.

So within that period of time, we focused on improving her grammar and comprehension because she needs to pass the exam which requires writing an essay and reading comprehension. After the sessions, she messaged me a few months after and told me that she passed her application in school abroad. After that, I helped her identify her new goal and purpose on why she needs to continue learning the English language and since she is surrounded by people coming from different countries we decided to focus on conversational English.

I shared this story for us to see the importance of having a purpose and goal in learning the English language. . We can’t have the same goals like what we had 5 years ago. We can’t just be saying “ oh I need to improve my English” NO, We have to be specific with our goal and purpose for us to see if we are improving or not. Here in Home for English learners, we help our students identify their goals and help them fulfil it.
